feature requests for ⊞Épinglé
par manas ·
Hi there!
As posted to the Binaryage forum, I'd love to have an option to press space (or some keyboard combo) while in grid view to spread out and see all windows for each desktop (like the default when invoking Mission Control). That description might be a big unhelpful, so let me know if you need additional context to understand what I'm suggesting.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the RS forum 👍. I have three questions about your feature request:
1) Would it make sense for you to do this in the BIG GRID?
2) Or on the ACTIVE DESKTOP, using another hot corner, similar to how Mission Control works today?
3) Or would you like BOTH OPTIONS?
Thanks!
I guess I'm looking for something that functions the way TotalSpaces did. Here's a screen recording of the look and feel of the process:
https://stevefish.com/retrospaces/rsgrid.mp4
Having it available on the Big Grid means I can see the windows on each desktop and more easily select which I want to zoom into or which I want to move from one desktop to another. I think that answers your question, but let me know if not.
Sure, I understand 🎉 I don’t use app tiling on my desktops, so that functionality hadn’t occurred to me yet. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ll take a look at what options macOS offers 👍

Version 0.4.0 is on the way 🎉
Grid now has two view options: Standard and Exploded.
You can set a Hotkey or Corner action to toggle between them. Each trigger will switch the grid to the next view. I hope this is it 😄
That seems to work well. I've mapped the default key combo to another button my mouse and it makes it work smoothly! :)
I did run into a bug I wanted to review with you. It happened when I was in the Grid and the move of a window from one desktop to another failed. This caused retro spaces to show out an error, but the Grid didn't go away and I couldn't get to the dialog box to confirm it which stuck my machine in a state where I struggled to get back to normal function. I finally got back to my desktop and saw the error dialog: https://stevefish.com/retrospaces/grid%20error01.png
I recently upgraded to mac OS 26.6.2 (25G83). Might this be causing the problem?
Ce message a été supprimé.
I should have just edited my last post.
I rebooted and the problem seemed to go away, but then it came back. It definitely seems to be triggered when I move windows across desktops in Grid view, but the crash/getting stuck seems to happen inconsistently. Happy to keep troubleshooting. Let me know how I can help.

That’s strange behavior from yabai. I’m testing on macOS 15.7.9 (24G830) and macOS 26.6.2 (25G83) - the same version you’re using - and everything works for me except for the known bug (see https://retrospaces.cz/forum/?topic=2).

What I would appreciate:
1) Please send me the diagnostic logs by going to Configuration → Debug and clicking Send diagnostic to developer now.
2) If you’d like, you can also enable Send anonymous diagnostics periodically.
The most common causes of this specific alert are:
1) The scripting addition failed to load or got unloaded — typically after restarting the Mac, updating yabai, or restarting Dock.app (the SA is injected into it) — this can be fixed with sudo yabai --load-sa.
2) SIP was re-enabled in the meantime, even partially — the SA will not work at all unless SIP is configured accordingly. The yabai process crashed, or the running yabai version does not match the installed SA.
I have just sent you the diagnostic logs. Let me know if you need anything else.
In the log, I can only see one issue, and that’s with the desktop wallpaper - nothing else. I pushed version 4.0.1 to production, where the desktop backgrounds are handled, so I can gather more information about the error. Unfortunately, I didn’t find out anything about yabai 🎉 However, I assume that if it still doesn’t work, the issue is that the entire yabai initialization process needs to be run again. The new version is not available yet 😢

I've been running retro spaces ever since our last exchange and I've encountered no errors. If they happen again, I'll let you know in a separate thread.
Would it be possible to make an option for the grid to appear (zoom out) from the direction of the Space currently occupied and then disappear (zoom in) to the Space selected? Right now it appears and disappears centered on the entire screen, but having it zoom in and out from the space occupied and then selected would be helpful for general orientation.
Thanks for the inspiration! 👍
I’m just releasing version 0.5.0 with a new ZOOM OUT / IN animation when switching from the current desktop to a new one. I’ve also changed the speed sliders to use more detailed steps. Thanks for the feedback 🎉
Wow! This is a wonderful update. Thanks for the quick development. :)
I have noticed that retro spaces isn't always accurate when it assumes which desktop I'm on or which desktop some of my open windows are on. Check out this example screen capture video where I zoom out and retro spaces thinks I'm on another desktop. Then when I change desktops and bring up the Grid, it has moved my windows around on the Grid even though they haven't changed on the actual desktops.

Let me know if you need me to troubleshoot this further. I feel like you're so close to this working perfectly. Thank you again for all your hard work on this!!
Hmm, this is weird behavior 👎 Did it start with version 0.5.0, or was it happening before that?
I can’t reproduce this bug. Could you send me your config file from ~/.config/retrospaces/config.json?
· modifié
and few questions:
1) how many displays you have?
2) can you change Debug in Settings to Debug (verbose) and reproduce this bug again. Then send me ~/.config/retrospaces/retrospaces.log to analyze
3) macOS version is latest?
4) yabai is working on the latest version also?
https://stevefish.com/retrospaces/config.json
It just started happening with 0.5.0.
I use two displays that are mirrored.
I just set Debug to verbose and sent you the results. I couldn't make the windows show up in unexpected places, but I could make the zoom go to the wrong window by opening the grid, closing it, swiping the trackpad to change desktops, and then opening the grid again.
I'm using macOS 26.6.2 (25G83).
I have yabai-v7.1.25 installed.
Quick note: I just opened the grid and it displayed my 9 spaces (which are usually organized 3x3) on a 3x4 grid. I opened my preferences and found it was set to 3x4, so I changed it back to 3x3. Not sure how that happened. Let me know if you want me to send over anything to troubleshoot this. I don't want to send the diagnostics in the app just in case that would write over what a sent above. If not, I'll send that over right away.
Great! And share with me ~/.config/retrospaces/retrospaces.log on your domains URL to download (like config for example). Because auditlog (log for developers) have only errors, not tunning data 🙂 Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the logs - they help a lot!
I’m preparing a fix for this bug for version 0.5.1 I have two questions:
1) Are you using an external display with your laptop display mirrored? This seems to be the source of the bug. Unfortunately, I don’t currently have a time for testing this setup on external display 😢
2) What type of wallpapers are you using on your laptop? Grid is trying to get the data needed to display the desktop wallpapers in the grid, but it can’t read the data correctly. Could you share a sample wallpaper or your wallpaper settings?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Sorry for the delay in reply... I was away from my computer last week, but I'm back now. :) Here are the answers to your questions:
1) Yes. Let me know if there is any testing I can perform to help out on this setup.
2) My wallpaper settings are messy and have been for a while. I am more than willing to set them all to default and test from there - or whatever would help. In general, however, they're set to Fill Screen, Shuffle every 30 minutes (not randomly), and not to show on all Spaces. They haven't been satisfactorily displaying for a while now (before using retro spaces), so I'm happy to experiment with whatever settings and changes will help you the most.
I'm now seeing issues pop up with the menubar from multiple apps layering on top of one another. When I click the overlayered menus, one will disappear and not allow me to access the other. I'm also experiencing occasional random desktop switching that I can't consistently reproduce. Not sure if this description helps, but I'll provide whatever feedback or input you need to help track these issues down.
Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing when I switch desktops using any method other than trackpad gestures:
https://stevefish.com/retrospaces/menumadness.png
It doesn't happen all the time and seems to calm down after a reboot, but it eventually gets to this point if I use retro spaces enough.
Because this problem is so persistent at this point, even after a reboot, until this is addressed and resolved, I will have to stop using retro spaces and go back to using TotalSpaces. I look forward to reconnecting with you again soon and resolving this bug. Let me know how I can help.
Hi, I’m finaly back from business trips around the world 😄 I’ll dive into the solutions today and see how it goes 👍

To address your feedback: ** **
1) I need to recreate the same setup in my office. I already have everything I need, including a second screen 😄. This bug is relatively low priority for me at the moment, as I need to resolve a few other issues first.
2) Regarding the logic behind the grid and wallpapers, the app retrieves each desktop’s wallpaper using the following logic:
Each desktop’s wallpaper is loaded from the local cache if available. Otherwise, it is read from the system wallpaper store. Plain images are loaded directly from their source file, while system colors, Aerials, and Dynamic Desktops use a screenshot of the visible wallpaper, captured in the background and cached on disk. Until that screenshot is available, a Dynamic Desktop falls back to the first image from its source file. Any other unsupported or unavailable wallpaper falls back to a gradient placeholder, which is never cached.
I'm always curious about what wallpapers users are using whenever I see the gradient on the screenshot that gets used as a last resort. I try to add more techniques to the code for retrieving wallpapers whenever I come across cases like that.

I have two requests:
1) Please report bugs here: https://retrospaces.cz/forum/t/known-bugs/, so they don’t get mixed in with feature requests.
2) I’m preparing a new version 0.5.2, which addresses some of the possible issues with overlapping app menus. These issues seem to happen when RetroSpaces is running while Mission Control is also being used. I’ve also added more information to the audit log to make debugging easier.
Please install this version and try to reproduce the issue. If it happens again, please describe exactly what you were doing and what happened.
